Tennessee Elevator Code Authority

Tennessee Elevator Code Authority: Currently we have twenty-four (24) field inspectors, and one (1) Elevator Inspector Supervisor employed by the Elevator Unit of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Every device, such as passenger and freight elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, ski lifts, sky lifts and trams are initially certified to the codes, rules and laws adopted by the State of Tennessee to ensure they are installed properly.  These devices are then re-inspected twice per year, amounting to over 25,000 inspections annually. By law, none of these devices can be operated until it is inspected by the Elevator Unit,  passes all safety test and then is assigned an identification number. State laws, rules and codes require that elevators be maintained in good condition. Inspectors check all the safety operations of these devices: the complete hoistway; limits; door locks and stop switches.  (excerpt from state website)
